Unlike other birds who migrate to different climates, the Resplendent Quetzal is an altitudinal migrant.
This means that these breathtakingly beautiful birds migrate up and down, from high up in the cloud forest where they nest and raise their families, to the lowlands where they "vacation" (pass the rainy season -- and eat)! Their lowland habitat is a focus of the BEN land purchase campaign right now.
The quetzal's favorite food is the wild avocado (roughly the size of a walnut).
