tapir

This (Baird's) Tapir in the brush may look like a funny pig, but is actually related to both the horse and the rhinoceros! And--tapirs have been around a VERY long time (tens of millions of years). Now, however, they are endangered.

Like pigs, they like to wallow in the mud, and are also terrific swimmers and divers (for aquatic plants
to eat).

Because the tapir requires a very large area of wild, undisturbed habitat,
it is the official LOGO of the
Monteverde Conservation
League.
