DREAM THE FOREST WILD: How

by Sue Memhard with Jim Crisp

Ahhh...the slowest of the slow, the 3-toed Sloth! These amazing tree-dwellers who spend their lives hanging upside down from branches move so slowly that it's hard to tell when they're moving or resting!

In fact, they are so slow that algae grows in their fur...and one kind of small moth nests in it. (the algae is great camoflage for its host).

People once thought sloths, um, hung out in just ONE tree, but actually they do change trees, about every 1-3 days.

Surprisingly, they are terrific swimmers--dropping from branches into rivers especially when they need to escape from predators.

Maybe we all can learn something about how to "hang slow" from these endangered mammals.

We don't know who took this photo (please contact us if you are the photographer).

We also don't know if this is a wild baby sloth that fell out of a tree near the beach, and was shortly returned to where its mother was (we hope)....or someone's pet.

At this moment it doesn't seem to matter to the sleeping little one.
